Order Margin Calculator for Online Stores

Profit per order after product, shipping, packaging and payment fees.

Put in what one order sells for and what it costs to get it out the door. The calculator shows what is left, as a dollar amount and as a share of the price, and the lowest price at which the order stops losing money.

Profit per order
$19.61
Margin on the sale price
40.9%
Lowest price that breaks even
$27.81

Payment fees are the sale price times the percentage plus the fixed amount. Profit is the sale price minus the product cost, the shipping label, the packaging and the payment fees. Margin is profit divided by the sale price. The break-even price is every cost that does not depend on the price, divided by one minus the fee percentage. The figures that open in the boxes come from an invented store, so change each one to match yours.

How this works

The calculation runs in four lines.

  1. Payment fees = sale price × fee percentage + fixed fee.
  2. Profit = sale price − product cost − shipping label − packaging − payment fees.
  3. Margin = profit ÷ sale price.
  4. Break-even price = (product cost + shipping + packaging + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − fee percentage).

The tool treats one order as one unit sold, so for a basket of several items add their prices and costs together. If customers pay for shipping, enter your label cost minus what they pay. Taxes, returns, discounts and overhead such as software and rent are left out, so this is a contribution margin and not a full profit figure. Processors differ in what they charge and whether they refund their fee when you refund a sale, so read your own statement. The starting values are invented placeholders.
